Mistake of Magic Review
There is a reason MISTAKE OF MAGIC is on the best-selling list on Amazon. If you are looking for an amazing KU pick, go no further than Alex Lidell’s reverse harem series POWER OF FIVE.
The second book begins right where the first book, POWER OF FIVE let’s off, so if you haven’t read book one, go get it now. I’ll give you a quick breakdown of the series before I go into MISTAKE OF MAGIC, because there will be spoilers from the first series, in the review.
The main character Lera is an indentured servant on a household near the borderlands that border the human lands from the fae lands. A mysterious woods separate the lands and there are spells that keep humans out, and magical animals in. Looking for their 5th member of their group, four fae warriors finally feel the call of who will be their 5th in their magical Quint – and bizarrely it drags them to the human lands and points them to the indentured servant Lera.
A human has never been called as part of a Quint, and a mixed gender quint has also never been formed, so immediately there are challenges, and the fae’s first inclination is to break up this magical mistake – before they get too attached. But, Lera is a force of nature, determined, selfless, and very attractive, and there is a magical tie bonding them together – so even though they don’t want it to happen, they become attached.
In the second book, Lera and her four fae, River, Coal, Tye, and Shade have been put through challenge after challenge and have come out stronger than ever, but doubtful that Lera will aid them in being able to do the job the magic has bonded them for. Lera is a human, and holds no power that can assist them in their fight. They are headed to the Citadel, now their mission is get the elders off their back, other than their first intention which was to cleave Lera from their magical bond. The elders are not convinced of Lera’s worth though, and they force the quint to go through the deadly challenges that they had gone through when they were first called into the quint.
In this installment things change a bit, in the first book you were introduced to the characters, focused on Lera and the interaction with the four fae, and that initially angsty push and pull of their established relationship. Now in Mistake of Magic you have the established relationship, with a deepening of it, but then the introduction and political influence of the fae world takes over.
This took a “shallow story” to the next level, which I love. You have an easy introduction in the first book, so you get time to enjoy the characters – and then the second book your are dumped head first into a HUGE world, and love every bit of it, because you are swimming around in the love of the characters, and their expanding relationship. There is so much going on, and things that might happen – it’s truly a fabulous read. I can’t wait to see how things unfold.
Mistake of Magic is a fantasy world that you’ll want to delve into immediately. Amazing characters, both the good and the bad, a unique world, and tons of angst between four men and one female. It’s truly an experience. Lidell did a fabulous job with this series. I can’t recommend it enough, I only had a few issues when reading them, and it mostly revolved around the dynamics of the magical world that didn’t make sense to me. Movement throughout the realms etc., which I would have loved if Lidell explained a little bit better, but if she would have done this I might be saying there was too much boring explanations.
Overall, I recommend this to readers who are looking for a good fantasy read with lots of romance, this is also a great introduction to the reverse harem genre. If you like series like Sarah Maas’ series, this is a great heavy romance hitter like that one.

Orphaned and sold to a harsh master, Lera's life is about mucking stalls, avoiding her master's advances, and steering clear of the mystical forest separating the mortal and fae worlds. Only fools venture into the immortal realms, and only dark rumors come out... Until four powerful fae warriors appear at Lera's barn. River, Coal, Tye, and Shade have waited a decade for their new fifth to be chosen, the wounds from their quint brother's loss still raw. But the magic has played a cruel trick, bonding the four immortal warriors to... a female. A mortal female.
Distractingly beautiful and dangerously frail, Lera can only be one thing--a mistake. Yet as the males bring Lera back to the fae lands to sever the bond, they discover that she holds more power over their souls than is safe for anyone... especially for Lera herself.
