A COWBOY'S SWEETHEART Excerpt & Giveaway
Javier leaned against the stall wall and crossed his arms. “So, is Westley named after a snooty London neighborhood, too?”
She stopped, a laugh caught in her throat from his ignorant yet highly amusing question. “You seriously don’t know?”
He shrugged and lowered his head until the brim of his hat concealed every part of his face but his lips. “Just trying to make conversation, and I figured that since you were named after a palace, he had some royal pedigree, too.”
This time, she didn’t bother to hold back her laughter. “I can’t believe you know about British palaces but don’t know the origin of my horse’s name.”
The hay looked like it had been sorted well enough, and she set the pitchfork aside to find the mysterious wheelbarrow and a shovel, ignoring him for now. The sooner she finished her chores, the sooner she could be free of him. Besides, she couldn’t understand why he seemed so interested in her. She was hot and sweaty and smelled like horses and manure. Even her perfect bun from this morning was falling apart, judging by the strands of hair that were sticking to her face. He probably found her dishevelment amusing.
For the second time in a matter of minutes, he’d managed to surprise her. She never suspected a farm boy would want to be enlightened. “He’s named after a character in The Princess Bride.”
She found the wheelbarrow, and by the time she’d moved to the front of the stall, he had somehow managed to procure a stiff-bristled broom and large scooper for her. “Why did you choose that name?” he asked.
“If you’d ever seen the movie, you’d understand.” She took the broom and swept all the waste into a big pile in the center of stall. “Whenever Buttercup asked Westley to do something, he’d say ‘As you wish’ and do it. My Westley is no different.”
“So you admit you like ordering people around?” A teasing grin played upon those lips, which grew more and more intriguing every time she looked at them.
A flush spread through her like a wildfire in the peak of summer. There was no logical reason why she was starting to find him attractive. All he’d managed to do was annoy her when he wasn’t openly mocking her. Yet she couldn’t help but wonder if this whole conversation was the cowboy’s way of flirting with her.
