There is no denying, the two author duo, Christina Lauren are a powerhouse author team. I have not read anything of there’s since their first couple of BEAUTIFUL books, and now I feel like I need to go back and read some more. ROOMIES was real. It was sweet, and angsty, with tons of great romantic moments – and “make you smile” kind of scenes. But, most of all it was real. I could see this actually happening, I could believe these characters could actually exist.
Lauren posted the first chapter on Books+Main and that’s when I was hooked. I read it and needed more, right that moment. Luckily, I had just gotten the audiobook in for review–I could not wait. It starts out with the main character rushing to a subway platform so she could experience a very talented busker that she has a crush on. She doesn’t know his name, or even what his eyes look like (he’s always looking down at his guitar), but she’s made up this elaborate back-story about him and wove him into her everyday fantasy.
When the book starts, Holland Bakker, is excitedly making her way over to the substation to see her crush, when she is accosted by a homeless person who pushes her onto the tracks. Calvin, the busker, witnesses it all and hurriedly calls the police, and hangs around to see if she’s okay, but then quickly disappears. Holland can’t figure out why he would disappear, and why he wouldn’t help her identify the man that pushed her. The paramedics think she tried to commit suicide. This even takes Calvin out of the crush zone, and into Holland’s reality. And now that she knows more about him, he becomes more real to her.
In her work life, she is a menial employee for a hit Broadway play, riding the coattails of her Uncles success. To quantify her reason for earning a paycheck, when the lead musician walks out — Holland thinks she has the perfect replacement. Calvin. The only problem is that he’s not a U.S. Citizen. In a weird move, fueled by guilt and maybe her past fantasies, Holland proposes a fake marriage to secure Calvin’s citizenship. And the whirlwind starts.
It was a great read. I liked the main characters, and even the side characters. I liked how Lauren developed them, brought them together and then gave realistic reasons to mix things up and make it angsty. I really could believe that a relationship like this could happen. It was beautiful.
Narration by K. C. Sheridan was spot on. And I highly recommend getting this one in audiobook format. Her Irish accent was perfect, and she did an amazing job doing Calvin’s parts.
Overall, a highly recommended read if you are looking for a cute romance. There were some tiny issues, with some forced “secrets” that perpetuated the angst, and they were a bit over the top, but it was minor. You should really enjoy this one.

Marriages of convenience are so…inconvenient.
Rescued by Calvin McLoughlin from a would-be subway attacker, Holland Bakker pays the brilliant musician back by pulling some of her errand-girl strings and getting him an audition with a big-time musical director. When the tryout goes better than even Holland could have imagined, Calvin is set for a great entry into Broadway—until he admits his student visa has expired and he’s in the country illegally.
Holland impulsively offers to wed the Irishman to keep him in New York, her growing infatuation a secret only to him. As their relationship evolves from awkward roommates to besotted lovers, Calvin becomes the darling of Broadway. In the middle of the theatrics and the acting-not-acting, what will it take for Holland and Calvin to realise that they both stopped pretending a long time ago?
