Michael Okon talks Monsters

The PJV: First, thank you for doing this! We’re a big fan of all things Monster on the PJV. But, please settle the great debate – which monster is your top contender for Monster of the year?

Michael: Thank you for having me! That’s a tough question to answer, because I love all monsters.  However, with the release of Monsterland, I can easily say werewolves take the top honors.  Or maybe its vampires.  I’m also loving The Glob – my version of the blob in the sequel.  Choosing a top monster is like choosing children, I can’t do it!

The PJV:  Would that choice differ if you actually became one of those monsters? (What monster would you prefer to become if you had the choice before being “turned?”)

Michael: I don’t believe so. Every monster has a weakness. But, if I had my choice to ANY monster, hands down – The Invisible Man. One of the best monsters I’ve ever seen on film.  Godzilla would be pretty cool too.

The PJV:  Can you tell us a little bit about your characters and what or who inspired them?

Michael: Monsterland is an ensemble cast.  We have Wyatt Baldwin, a shy teen who is trying to fit into his new home in Copper Valley, CA. He loves zombies. Then there is Melvin, a werewolf fanatic who is living on the fringe of society. And then there is Howard Drucker who has a crush on Keisha, the prettiest girl in school. Howard has an affinity for vampires.  These three boys are an amalgamation of me as a teenager.  Everything they are going through, being bullied, feeling uncomfortable in your own skin, asking a girl out, is exactly what I went through. These feelings came out onto the page.

The PJV:  What is your favorite scene (without giving away too much) from MONSTERLAND?

Michael: The Werewolf River Run. Think Splash Mountain and Pirates of the Caribbean but instead you’re being chased by actual werewolves.

The PJV:  R.L. Stine or Christopher Pike?

Michael: Stine.  All day.

The PJV: Why did you decide to write a horror novel?

Michael: I’ve always wanted to write a monster novel but I could not settle on which monster to write about.  I was binge watching a movie marathon with my son and asked myself, why isn’t there a theme park with zombies. I called my brother and told him the idea. He said it has to be werewolves, vampires and zombies.  I started writing that night.

The PJV: And finally, if you could recommend to our audience a scary movie they must watch for the Halloween season, what would it be?

Michael: The Shining.

Thank you so much for your time!
