Marie Lu does it again with her gamer inspired Warcross. Lu spins an imaginative tale that makes you think, crosses lines between usual protagonist and antagonist roles, and entertains in her usual provocative style.

The story is about a girl name Emika Chan, she’s a down on her luck bounty hunter that would be a well-employed hacker if she hadn’t had a few run-ins with the law in her youth. She had led a charmed life, but her father’s passing and the debt he left her in threw a crimp in her plans, leaving her impoverished and desperate. Emika’s world is a changed landscape, brought on by the invention of virtual reality glasses that modify the brain and not the senses. Like the iPhone revolutionized our landscape and changed the way the world works, in Lu’s story the invention of the neurolink has taken things to the next level. With this invention people have become immersed in a game called Warcross and are celebrating the upcoming championship. In the opening ceremony a moment of desperation leads Emika to try and steal a valuable Warcross tool, but her hack shoots her into the spotlight instead.

Emika expects to be arrested, but instead she’s asked to join the Warcross teams, as a spy for the game’s designer Hideo Tanaka. This could change Emika’s life forever.

It’s a wild ride and a great read. Lu spins a very diverse and broad reaching tale, that is not overstated as some “forced diversity “ reads. We know the characters are different then the usual, but it’s understated, and assumed. She did it wonderfully. I loved reading about the characters and their backgrounds, but their difference wasn’t forced into my face with each sentence and rumination. This is how you do it. The characters choices also made me think, there were surprises around ever corner and the ending had my mind blown. I truly didn’t know what choice I would have made, if I was in Emika’s shoes.

On deeper thought, yes there were a few plot issues where there was unnecessary drama to advance the finale. But, in the end it was a good story. I can’t wait to read more from this series. I enjoyed the characters, Emika’s voice was real and Hideo was a dynamic character that was also one of my favorites.

Marie Lu’s Warcross is a breath-taking diverse story, full of intrigue, wonderful characters and plot twists.

The narration is by Nancy Wu who is the perfect voice for Emika. I forgot I was listening to a book and fell into the story.

For the millions who log in every day, Warcross isn’t just a game—it’s a way of life. The obsession started ten years ago and its fan base now spans the globe, some eager to escape from reality and others hoping to make a profit. Struggling to make ends meet, teenage hacker Emika Chen works as a bounty hunter, tracking down players who bet on the game illegally. But the bounty hunting world is a competitive one, and survival has not been easy. Needing to make some quick cash, Emika takes a risk and hacks into the opening game of the international Warcross Championships—only to accidentally glitch herself into the action and become an overnight sensation.

Convinced she’s going to be arrested, Emika is shocked when instead she gets a call from the game’s creator, the elusive young billionaire Hideo Tanaka, with an irresistible offer. He needs a spy on the inside of this year’s tournament in order to uncover a security problem . . . and he wants Emika for the job. With no time to lose, Emika’s whisked off to Tokyo and thrust into a world of fame and fortune that she’s only dreamed of. But soon her investigation uncovers a sinister plot, with major consequences for the entire Warcross empire.
