Top 16 Most Kick-Ass Chicks on Screen
Inspired by a friend’s Facebook posts, that I shared on my page, this post was born. The post in question basically mocked all the “OMG WONDER WOMAN” reviews. “I’ve never seen a woman this badass on screen,” they say (allegedly). And of course, Buffy and I, of course, beg to differ. Maybe a 9-year-old that has only watched Sesame Street all their life, can say that. But, to me, who has been inspired by kick-ass chicks on the screen since childhood…well, I know differently. No offense to the Wonder Woman movie, (see my review) I loved the movie, and it kicked some serious ass. But, women have been kicking ass on the screen for decades. Not as many as I would like, but to dismiss them as if there were none that came before is insulting. I would like to share all the female characters that inspire me to write and inspire me to be a kick-ass female myself!
Here are my TOP 16 Kick-Ass Chicks on Screen:
Linda Carter as Wonder Woman
Yes, Wonder Woman existed before…and was just as sexy and kick-ass as she is today. She was a little before my time, but that was what reruns were for.
Eliza Dushku as Echo
The short-running Whedon show, Dollhouse, showcased Eliza Dushku in a highly kick-ass roll. Eliza is the only actress that gets a double showing in the top 16.
Carrie-Anne Moss as Trinity
The Matrix character of Trinity never faltered. She should have been the Chosen One.
Milla Jovovich as Alice
Milla Jovovich is going strong and kicking serious tail in the Resident Evil franchise. Is a video game inspired movie, not an action figure? But, seriously…Milla herself kicks ass, solidified as one of my favorite action stars because of her portrayal of as LeeLoo…(The Fifth Element) who should probably be mentioned on this list, but 17 was kind of a whacky number.
Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow
Scarlett Johansson is another kick-ass action star. Her roles as Lucy and Major in Ghost in the Shell (not a great movie, but she kicked some tail), shows she can hold her own with the boys. In The Avengers franchise, she plays a comic book character, a kick-ass female, and is an action star. Oh, yeah…she’s female. She’ll get her own movie soon.
Lori Petty as Tank Girl
Tank Girl defined my high school years. Oh, based off of a comic too. Yeah, the kangaroo things were a bit weird, but it was cool to have a tank.
Summer Glau as River Song
Joss Whedon knows how to create a strong female character…there were so many on Firefly, but River paired a bit of insanity with kick-assity, which made for a whole level of awesome. WW Fun Fact #2043 Joss Whedon was slated to write Wonder Woman when it was slated for production more than a decade ago, and the script was supposedly leaked on Twitter. Let’s just say, if this is his script – Thank the Gods – that it wasn’t the one they went with. You can see all the details here and the reason that most people are calling it a sexist and ridiculous portrayal of Wonder Woman.
Eliza Dushku as Faith
Faith might not have been the “best” character on Buffy, but she was always 5 by 5 with me. She was the best antagonist on the show (well maybe not the best…err can you say Spike), so I’ll say the best female antagonist.
Carrie Fisher as Leia
Leia might have been a princess (don’t roll your eyes) and she might not have done a lot of kung fu or wielded a glowy sword, but she knew how to take charge. And she was never tempted by the dark side… #girlpower
Danai Gurira as Michonne
Move over Rick, Michonne needs to take over as the leader of The Walking Dead survivors. She’s got it all, street smarts, a cool ass sword, a heart…and a willingness to kill when necessary.
Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor
Sarah Connor might have been “sweet” in the first Terminator. But Terminator 2 – OMG. That chin-up scene in the looney bin… enough said.
Chloe Moretz as Hit Girl
My favorite pre-teen ass kicker! Hit Girl might not have the lead role in “Kick-Ass”, but she should have…because she stole the show.
Sigourney Weaver as Ellen Ripley
Aliens scare me shitless, but if Ripley was there I wouldn’t fear them. Well, maybe a little, since she’s usually the only one to survive.
Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen
Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games is an iconic character, a hero in her own right, even if she happens to be female. Always a favorite.
Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy Summers
Not many can touch Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy Summers, in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Cute and kick-ass, boom. But, there are so many kick-ass chicks on that show, I feel guilty for not including Willow & Anya!
Jessica Alba as Max Guevara
Dark Angel only had one good season…sorry season 2, she might have had better hair, and well Jensen was on season 2…but then there was also Joshua. There was a reason the show got canceled, but it made an impact in that short of a time, at least for me. It is still my favorite kick-ass female lead show. I love Buffy, but not as much as Max.
