BLOOD ROSE REBELLION
by Rosalyn Eves
A MIDDLE OF THE ROAD Young Adult Fantasy, Blood Rose Rebellion, entertains but underwhelms at the same time. This is the first book in a new series from debut author Rosalyn Eves. The book is set in an alternative reality, 19th century. The main character is a young girl from London who lives in a world of magic, but only the upper classes have magic, which is by design. Anne has no magic, which leaves her with not many options, since most families marry for money. When she unwittingly messes up her sister’s “coming out” party, she is sent to Hungary to live with family and escape the gossip, and the hatred of her peers.
There was nothing I could come out and say I disliked about this book, strongly, but on the other the only thing I really enjoyed about this book was that it was set in alternate reality 19th century Hungary. Which was different. But, the main character was from a more “refined” area of the world and looked at Hungary from an outsiders POV, so it wasn’t an immersion into a more diverse character’s perspective. Which would have been interesting?
I enjoyed the idea behind the story, the class-based system of magic, and then the mix of Romani magic and the prejudice against them. It was interesting to read about customs, intertwined with the magical world, but unfortunately, the interaction with the characters fell flat for me. There was a potential romance, that was rather benign. I wasn’t rooting for the couple. I also found the main character Anna was always lost in her “decision.” She would ruminate about said decision and then suddenly make a decision that went against what I thought was her logical choice. And then go in the opposite direction at the next step in the resolution of the problem. I’m guessing this was to keep us on our toes, but it felt forced.
Overall, I am undecided if I will read the second book. There were a few things of this book that were enjoyable, but I’m not dying to find out what is going to happen to Anna, and that’s unfortunate, because I really wanted to like this book. In the end, this gets 3-stars. Check it out if you like historical fantasy novels, you might like it more than me.
Narration by Fiona Hardingham was well done, the narrator has a sweet, British accent and captured Anne’s voice well. I didn’t like her male voices, but I’m not usually impressed with female narrators male voices. Especially with accents.

Narrator: Fiona Hardingham

Genres: YA Fantasy
The thrilling first book in a YA fantasy trilogy for fans of Red Queen. In a world where social prestige derives from a trifecta of blood, money, and magic, one girl has the ability to break the spell that holds the social order in place.
Sixteen-year-old Anna Arden is barred from society by a defect of blood. Though her family is part of the Luminate, powerful users of magic, she is Barren, unable to perform the simplest spells. Anna would do anything to belong. But her fate takes another course when, after inadvertently breaking her sister’s debutante spell—an important chance for a highborn young woman to show her prowess with magic—Anna finds herself exiled to her family’s once powerful but now crumbling native Hungary.
Her life might well be over.
In Hungary, Anna discovers that nothing is quite as it seems. Not the people around her, from her aloof cousin Noémi to the fierce and handsome Romani Gábor. Not the society she’s known all her life, for discontent with the Luminate is sweeping the land. And not her lack of magic. Isolated from the only world she cares about, Anna still can’t seem to stop herself from breaking spells.
As rebellion spreads across the region, Anna’s unique ability becomes the catalyst everyone is seeking. In the company of nobles, revolutionaries, and Romanies, Anna must choose: deny her unique power and cling to the life she’s always wanted, or embrace her ability and change that world forever.
