Claudia Gray is a Young Adult powerhouse. She’s a favorite author and her worlds are always so HUGE, full of a life of their own. Truly a great imagination. Defy the Stars is no different. It’s a space saga, with an underlying look at what makes us human, in the vein of the sci-fi greats, such as Isaac Asimov. There is a sweet romance between two unlikely protagonists, and a journey from one planet to the next as the two try to save what matters the most to them, which doesn’t always align.
The story starts in the midst of a battle, as Noemi Vidal, soldier of Genesis, will stop at nothing to protect her planet. Her enemy: Earth. Earth uses machines to fight them, while Genesis sacrifices its youth. Noemi is on a mission, which leads to tragedy and her discovery of Abel. Abel is a mythic A class android, rumored to have the most advanced program that exists. At first, Abel tries to kill her, but when logic and programming overcome him, he realizes she’s the only human so she becomes his master.
Not used to utilizing machines, especially ones that look so human, Noemi knows that Abel might be her only chance to save her planet by shutting down Earth’s only way into their galaxy. In the process though, Noemi discovers something about herself and her new ally and that not everything is as it seems.
You’ll love every minute of their journey too. At least I did. Gray has a way of building worlds, and in this book, she built a few. There were worlds that embraced decadence, worlds that put religious freedom and sacrifice first, ones that but technology as their one and only god… it was quite a journey and I can’t wait to read more. There was a romance between Abel and Noemi that seemed doomed from the beginning, as any pairing of this nature would be. It was heartfelt and sweet and I was rooting for them, even though Abel and Noemi were trying at times. I found the antagonist in the story was a bit over the top, and the steps the characters had to take were accomplished through impossible tasks, but overall it was a good read.
The narration was done with Kasey Lee Huizinga as Noemi’s voice and Nate Begle as Abel’s parts. It was excellent and it brought life to the story. I read the ARC and then switched to the audiobook and enjoyed the audio a lot. Great read. Great listen.

She’s a soldier.
Noemi Vidal is seventeen years old and sworn to protect her planet, Genesis. She’s willing to risk anything—including her own life. To their enemies on Earth, she’s a rebel.
He’s a machine.
Abandoned in space for years, utterly alone, Abel has advanced programming that’s begun to evolve. He wants only to protect his creator, and to be free. To the people of Genesis, he’s an abomination.
Noemi and Abel are enemies in an interstellar war, forced by chance to work together as they embark on a daring journey through the stars. Their efforts would end the fighting for good, but they’re not without sacrifice. The stakes are even higher than either of them first realized, and the more time they spend together, the more they’re forced to question everything they’d been taught was true.

The Dead Zone is a classic Stephen King, published in 1979, now available in audiobook and read by James Franco. The Dead Zone isn’t my favorite Stephen King, but that’s like comparing chocolate ice cream. With the narration by James Franco, they did a major push to get this one out there and “reread” by the masses. There is always a difference in reading and hearing it on audiobook, I think of audiobooks as performances – like a play of a book. And it’s even better when I’ve read the book, and now get to hear it on audiobook. Like an encore. This was an all-star encore!read more
