An epic tale, THE PASSAGE by Justin Cronin, is one of the broad sweeping books that sucks you in and drags you along for the ride. It’s horrific, startling, and uncomfortable all at the same time. It’s sort of like reading Steinbeck, but with vampires in the apocalypse.
THE PASSAGE is a hard novel to surmise. The story focuses on a young girl, Amy, the daughter of a prostitute, abandoned at a convent and taken in by a nun who believes she is the answer to everything. Amy comes under the attention of the U.S. Military and Special Agent Brad Wolgast is ordered to pick her up and bring her to be experimented on along with a few inmates that were recruited for the same thing. Not trying to give anything away…the experiments go terribly wrong and Amy and Wolgast find themselves caught up in an apocalyptic plague of horror and inexplicable change.
The entire story is set in different parts. The end and the result. It’s a HUGE novel, 800 pages of intense drama. Cronin knows how to set-up a scene, he builds tension and anticipation well. Some parts don’t always make sense, Cronin can drag you down in very descriptive parts – but that description can lead to some gory imaginings.
I enjoyed the story and found it different. Not the usual horror fare. When you read “vampire apocalypse” don’t stop there, because it is much more. If you’re looking for something new…check The Passage.
