I had really high hopes for Sonya Weiss’ REVENGE. It had me thinking Armentrout’s Obsidian from genre / cover etc. But, Revenge was not Obsidian, not even close. I was actually rather disappointed with Revenge, only because I felt like I was coming into a series – and not reading a stand-alone book. I don’t like to be confused, or feel like I’m missing something when I’m reading a scifi novel, so while the writing was done well, I think the plot needed to be established a bit better.
I do have to preface this with the fact that I did think this story had a lot of potential. Maybe the ARC wasn’t as tight as the final version, or this is meant to be the beginning of a series – and it’s not marked, I can’t know (because I couldn’t find anything), all I know – I felt like I was missing something. The story was just a little bit bigger than what was written. They had this huge world all crammed into 250 pages. Juliet Sawyer is an alien, from a planet that humans destroyed. The destruction happened because of an accident, but the aliens still blame the humans and have declared revenge. They plan on killing off every last human and taking over the Earth.
The aliens are doing this by regulating breeding, not allowing the supernatural aliens to interbreed with humans – if you do – those children are killed. Juliet’s father is a member of the resistance, he’s actively opposed to killing off all the humans and is killed because of his stance. Juliet is his ace in the hole, she’s been genetically modified to oppose the ruling majority…and disguised as his daughter.
When Juliet is called into service, forced to train with Riley West, the son of the one of the leaders, Juliet is scared she’ll be found out. But, instead she falls in love with Riley.
It’s an interesting story, unfortunately most of it happens before the timeline. The timeline begins with the introduction of Riley, when he shows up to begin training Juliet. The story of Juliet hiding the half human children, her fathers death, the established relationships with friends etc – all before the timeline, so it actually felt like I was reading book two in a series. Because this happens right in the beginning I could never truly get into this book. Again, I do like this story, I liked Juliet and Weiss knows how to right angst and romance…I just wanted more from a science fiction Young Adult.
I received this book for free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Their love is a ticking time bomb.
Juliet Sawyer was born to save the world. Gifted with incredible powers, she’s the only one standing in the way of The Great Extinction, the prophesied battle between Supernaturals and humans. In order to keep her sister safe and avenge her father’s murder, she’ll have to infiltrate the ranks of the Supernatural leaders who wish to destroy her. The gorgeous and dangerous son of one of the Supernatural leaders, Riley West is in charge of training the group for war—now including Juliet, whose father is responsible for killing his family. But the more they train together, the more intensely their passion for each other burns. The deeper Riley is drawn in by Juliet’s beauty, the closer he gets to the secrets she keeps: one that will challenge everything he believes in—and one that could lead to her death.
