I like Deborah Blake’s BABA Yaga series, so I was excited to read the new one from her, VEILED MAGIC. And while the book was entertaining and I really liked the characters, they plot didn’t mesh together well for me. Some things just didn’t make sense. Enjoyed the writing, enjoyed the interplay between the characters, just not the overall story.
The story begins right off the bat with the introduction of Police officer and Witch Donata Santori. Witches are “out of the closet” in this series, while the rest of the paranormal creatures are still hidden away. Witch Donata Santori works for the agency as a liaison between the dead and the police agency, her job is to summon the recently deceased and get their story. It’s a good way to solve a homicide.
The first case in this book seems like an open and shut, Donata summons an art thief who was killed while committing a crime. The goal was to find out who hired him, but almost instantly the case becomes a lot more complicated when the art restorer who was murdered asks Santori for help. The painting he was working on could be used to wipe out the entire paranormal community…so she has to get it to safety or destroy it.
This is where the plot kind of got jumbled for me, because within the story they never quite explained how they used this painting to expose the paranormal races. Supposedly the picture depicts the paranormal races…and within the painting you can get clues to locate these paranormal races, so in the hands of the enemy it can be used for BAD. The enemy is the Catholic Church, which employs some underground cabal that hunts paranormals. I just wished this art aspect was a little more flushed out, because of course it was within every aspect of the book. But, every time they spoke of the painting, my brain asked – why a painting? So, it kind of brought the book down in my estimation.
Again, I look forward to reading more from Deborah Blake, I do like her writing and I understand how these paranormal worlds can get so BIG that they are hard to convey within a short mass-market paperback. Just, next time I hope for more.
I received this book for free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Since Witches came out of the broom-closet in the early 21st century, they have worked alongside humans as police officers, healers, stock traders, and more. But they aren’t the only paranormal entities in our world...
Police officer and Witch Donata Santori spends her days interrogating dead witnesses by summoning their spectral forms. Normally the job is little more than taking statements and filing reports. But when she’s called in on the case of a murdered art restorer, she finds herself suddenly in possession of a mystical portrait that both the human and paranormal communities would kill to get their hands on.
Unable to take on the forces hunting her alone, Donata seeks help from two unlikely and attractive allies: a reluctant shape-changer and a half-dragon art forger. But as the three of them hurry to uncover the truth about the powerful painting, Donata realizes that she’s caught in the middle of not one but two wars—one for possession of the painting’s secrets and one for possession of her heart...
