Rachel Vincent always impresses me with her imagination. The world this author creates are brilliant. Her way with words and the rich world building never fail to paint a breathtaking and fantastical story. Vincent is definitely a must read author. Her new series THE STARS NEVER RISE was no different. Scary and exciting, this Young Adult dystopian had me on the edge of my seat.
THE STARS NEVER RISE is set in an alternative future where the world has been decimated by demons. To protect humans against possession and losing their souls the Church has become the governing body. The Church’s exorcist are the soldiers in the war against the demons and pious living and dedication to the Church are how everyday people fight the good fight.
Nina Kane is sixteen years old and has been hiding the fact that her mother is a drug-addict for a really long time. She doesn’t want to be in the Church’s car and would rather fend for herself and her little sister Mellie than any assistance the Church can give her. But, when Nina finds out Mellie is hiding something that could ruin everything, Nina’s entire world is thrown upside down. Truths she believed turn out to be false and her life, terrible as it was, is no longer the same. Just as everything looks like it will go up in flames…a group of outlaws, wanted by the Church, swoop in and pull Nina into their ranks. Finn, a charming, skilled fighter and a rogue exorcist, saves her and informs her about what is really going on behind the scenes in her town of New Temperance. Nina must make a choice between fighting the demons that hunt her, or standing her ground and saving her sister. It won’t be an easy choice though.
A very fast-paced and exciting book, you have demons and evil Church officials and a bleak dystopian landscape. Win for me. A must read if I must say so myself. The only thing I didn’t quite enjoy about this book was the rushed romance, I think Vincent could have gotten rid of the romance all together. Maybe hinted at it in the first book and developed it later. Finn, who is a very different and experimental character – props to Vincent for doing this – was almost immediately smitten with Nina. And it seemed that Nina was almost forced into liking him back by the other members of the group. The romance didn’t ring true. It was the ONLY part of the story that didn’t ring true. The rest of the novel was fantastic and I can’t wait to read more. Rachel Vincent you are on a roll with these new series, they are dark and exciting…keep ‘em coming!

Sixteen-year-old Nina Kane should be worrying about her immortal soul, but she's too busy trying to actually survive. Her town's population has been decimated by soul-consuming demons, and souls are in short supply. Watching over her younger sister, Mellie, and scraping together food and money are all that matters. The two of them are a family. They gave up on their deadbeat mom a long time ago.
When Nina discovers that Mellie is keeping a secret that threatens their very existence, she'll do anything to protect her. Because in New Temperance, sins are prosecuted as crimes by the brutal Church and its army of black-robed exorcists. And Mellie's sin has put her in serious trouble.
To keep them both alive, Nina will need to trust Finn, a fugitive with deep green eyes who has already saved her life once and who might just be an exorcist. But what kind of exorcist wears a hoodie?
Wanted by the Church and hunted by dark forces, Nina knows she can't survive on her own. She needs Finn and his group of rogue friends just as much as they need her.
