If you want to THINK while you are entertained, Rachel Vincent’s MENAGERIE is the book for you. Filled with rich imagery and deep topics, MENAGERIE will keep you guessing, will give you chills, and will scare you senseless.

Vincent plunges you right into the story with a “flashback” that sets the chilling feel from the get-go. MENAGERIE is set in an alternate world where there are paranormal creatures, called cryptids, of all makes and models present on the Earth. In the distant past of the novel’s timeline a terrible tragedy struck that took a lot of the world’s children. The paranormal creatures were blamed and they were then rounded up and caged, experimented on or sold to “collectors.”

The novel’s main character is Delilah who doesn’t like the way cryptids are treated. She attended schools to study them, but decided the only way she would be able to study them was in captivity where they are experimented on. She doesn’t agree with their treatment, but there is nothing much she can do. Until it is discovered that she is one of them…

This novel is a tough one to read, one of Vincent’s darker titles, this one pushes the envelope of gruesome and horrendous at every point. There also wasn’t a romance, which I’ve become used to in Vincent’s books. This title is about a message about humanity and the way governments overreact in times of crisis. It was interesting and intense and very enjoyable. Vincent proved that no romance is needed to write a great paranormal story.

From New York Times bestselling author Rachel Vincent comes a richly imagined, provocative new series set in the dark mythology of the Menagerie…
When Delilah Marlow visits a famous traveling carnival, Metzger's Menagerie, she is an ordinary woman in a not-quite-ordinary world. But under the macabre circus black-top, she discovers a fierce, sharp-clawed creature lurking just beneath her human veneer. Captured and put on exhibition, Delilah in her black swan burlesque costume is stripped of her worldly possessions, including her own name, as she's forced to "perform" in town after town.
But there is breathtaking beauty behind the seamy and grotesque reality of the carnival. Gallagher, her handler, is as kind as he is cryptic and strong. The other "attractions"—mermaids, minotaurs, gryphons and kelpies—are strange, yes, but they share a bond forged by the brutal realities of captivity. And as Delilah struggles for her freedom, and for her fellow menagerie, she'll discover a strength and a purpose she never knew existed.
Renowned author Rachel Vincent weaves an intoxicating blend of carnival magic and startling humanity in this intricately woven and powerful tale.
