I’m always excited over a new Julie Kagawa release and TALON was a great Young Adult read but it didn’t blow me away. I prefer her darker, grittier type of novels and this one was a little more typical Young Adult fantasy for my taste. It was a good read, but it was very similar to other YA books in it’s genre that I was rather disappointed. I got a good read when I wanted a GREAT read.

Dragons exist in Julie Kagawa’s latest series, TALON. They were hunted to extinction hundreds of years ago and now dragons will do anything to survive. The story follows Ember and Dante, sixteen year old dragons that are sent to a beach town to learn how to coexist with humans. The twins have been in seclusion, told what to do, forced to obey and this is their first taste of freedom.

With that first taste of freedom comes new revelations and an unexpected romance for Ember and suddenly she is questioning everything about her life and the world of her kin.

It’s an interesting world that Kagawa created and I actually really enjoyed the dragon part and the dragon slayer part, I thought those were well hashed out and phenomenal. Kagawa took great care into creating this alternate universe where dragons live on the fridges of the modern world and I really loved that. The problem with the book arose in the romance, I felt it was forced and there was a bit of suspension of disbelief as far as the mystery of the whole thing.

Garret is there hunting dragons and he comes upon twins named Ember and Dante – um. Clue number one. The fact this is the first time in human form and suddenly human boys are hot. You stick me in a dragon body and I still don’t think I would be “oh look at his scales.” Just those type of things were popping me out of the book and not making it as enjoyable as I wanted it to be. Granted, I hate saying this, but Kagawa’s other series have been so amazing that I was expecting to be blown away and this one just didn’t do that for me. You may love it though, especially if you like dragon stories and YA romance.

Long ago, dragons were hunted to near extinction by the Order of St. George, a legendary society of dragon slayers. Hiding in human form and growing their numbers in secret, the dragons of Talon have become strong and cunning, and they're positioned to take over the world with humans none the wiser.

Ember and Dante Hill are the only sister and brother known to dragonkind. Trained to infiltrate society, Ember wants to live the teen experience and enjoy a summer of freedom before taking her destined place in Talon. But destiny is a matter of perspective, and a rogue dragon will soon challenge everything Ember has been taught. As Ember struggles to accept her future, she and her brother are hunted by the Order of St. George.

Soldier Garret Xavier Sebastian has a mission to seek and destroy all dragons, and Talon's newest recruits in particular. But he cannot kill unless he is certain he has found his prey: and nothing is certain about Ember Hill. Faced with Ember's bravery, confidence and all-too-human desires, Garret begins to question everything that the Order has ingrained in him: and what he might be willing to give up to find the truth about dragons.
