This might not be one of the most exciting paranormal romance, or urban fantasy novels out there, but the nuances within the writing and the story setting make it a wonderful read. Just take the fact that it’s a prohibition era novel, which pairs a white heroine with a Chinese hero which was illegal at that time, made it a win for me. A must read. What are you waiting for?
The third book in the Roaring Twenties Paranormal Romance series, GRAVE PHANTOMS features Astrid, little sister of the previous heroes and her life-long friend Bo, a Chinese American and employee of the Magnusson family. Astrid’s older brother is the head of the Magnusson family and a bootlegger. Bo is one of his most trusted employees.
Astrid and Bo have been battling their attraction to each other for years. They know they can’t be together, even the community says they must stay far away. I thought the interaction between the characters and the underlying mystery made this book the gem that it is. There was a light paranormal element, more on the lines of Magical Realism, than a PNR in the sense that most of us are used to. The focus was on more of a “lifestyle” element, the period, the cultural aspect and the characters. I loved it all.
I did have some issues with it being a bit slow, the elements all seemed “light” so it wasn’t as high-impact as I was used to, yes it was different than the usual, but different sometimes has it’s drawbacks. I am also not that huge of a historical reader – and this was dated enough to be considered a historical, or vintage read. But, these are my personal preferences. Most PNR fans should really enjoy.
Recommendation: For fans of paranormal romances of a more lighter nature, check this one up. If you like a bit of mystery with a touch of paranormal – this is also a great one for you. Enjoy! And if you are looking to read DIVERSE paranormal romance novels – this is DEFINITELY the book for you.
I received this book for free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
