The Scariest Adult Horror Novels of all time!
or at least the ones I’ve read…
It is that time of year again! There is no holiday I love more then Halloween and I’ll take a scary book over a movie any day. My first genre love was horror and still to this day the genre holds a special spot in my heart. Nothing like freaking out, scared silly because of a perfectly horrific description.
1It by Stephen King
When it comes to horror novels, Stephen King’s name is always in the lead. His novel IT is the stuff of nightmares and takes the number one spot as the scariest book ever. An evil clown that haunts children, drags them into the drain and eats them alive…yes, this is the stuff of nightmares. Between this book and Poltergeist, my fear of clowns was cemented.
There is creepy and then there is Poe creepy. Edgar Allan Poe wrote some of the freakiest stuff that I’ve ever read. His poems and novellas gave me shivers. He is best known for his poems like The Raven but check out The Fall of the House of Usher, it is one of his more creepier pieces. Keyword of this segment: creepy.
“During the whole of a dull, dark, and soundless day in the autumn of the year, when the clouds hung oppressively low in the heavens, I had been passing alone, on horseback, through a singularly dreary tract of country; and at length found myself, as the shades of the evening drew on, within view of the melancholy House of Usher.” ― Edgar Allan Poe, The Fall of the House of Usher and Other Tales
“There’s no use wasting are energy being afraid of the devils, demons and things that go bump in the night… Because ultimately we’ll never encounter anything more terrifying than the monster among us. Hell is where we make it.” ― Dean Koontz, Phantoms
The book that cemented my biggest phobia, aliens. I am now scared of aliens, IRL. Clowns maybe creepy, but aliens are what I fear at the end of my bed, grabbing my feet. Because of this true story by Whitley Strieber.
“Little blue f**kers, about that big.” – Whitley Strieber
The Scariest Young Adult Horror Novels of all time!
or at least the ones I’ve read…
If you like your horror with a little kissing and teenage angst this is the list for you. Topping our charts…
Ashes scared my pants off…from zombies, to roving packs of killer dogs…crazed townspeople…you name it. And of course, kissing…
“It was that stages-of-anger thing. I was shocked and then I got pissed and then I fought like hell … and then I went numb. They called it acceptance, but it wasn’t. It’s what happens when you have only two choices: live with the monster, or kill yourself.” ― Ilsa J. Bick, Ashes
One of the scariest Young Adult novels I’ve read, there is even a vivisection…
“I peek over the back of the couch and there she is, my goddess of death, her hair snaking out in a great black cloud, her teeth grinding hard enough to make living gums bleed.” ― Kendare Blake, Anna Dressed in Blood
I just have to say — the baby scene haunted me for weeks after reading this book. I never could move on in the series I was so disturbed.
“There is a child – a baby – who long since kicked off her blankets. Her skin is ashen and her mouth open in a perpetual yet silent scream. She isn’t old enough to roll over, to sit up, to climb. So she lies there kicking her fat legs against the footboard of the crib, eternally calling for her mother. For food. For flesh.” ― Carrie Ryan, The Forest of Hands and Teeth
I went through an R.L. Stine, Christopher Pike phase when I was in 4th grade. I couldn’t tell you one book title…except Remember Me. Scared me silly. That freaky shadow.
What scares you? What are the scariest books you’ve ever read??
