Ladies, in our world there’s a creep on every corner. Predators in the produce section, the lingerie department, at the playground. Bullies lurk at the job, fun time places, even in innocuous church pews. Don’t be a victim. You owe it to yourself to know how to whip out some whoopass when the need arises, and Kalila Montgomery from Wonderfully Wicked is here to give you some practical tips.
Refuse to be Used. I grew up in a long string of foster homes, not that I’m complaining, and that’s not my point. I learned fast that I’m the only one who will stick up for me. Don’t fall into the doormat trap—no matter your freak factor, you don’t deserve to be marginalized by anyone. Attitude is everything, girls. Once you start taking crap, you can bet your britches a sewer storm is coming. Be strong, remember who you are (and in case you’ve already forgotten – you’re capital A awesome), and if you go down, go down scratching.
Be Prepared. Despite your amazingness, you can’t predict when danger will strike. Could be while plucking your nose hair, trying to catch some snooze-time, or impatiently waiting in line for your morning mocha. Do yourself a favor. Expect it. Be aware of your surroundings at all times. That guy standing behind you in line at the coffee shop might look tasty, but so did Ted Bundy. Wear sturdy shoes for running (I prefer Doc Martens), keep a weapon handy at all times (knife beneath the pillow generally works), and trust no one (BFFs excluded from that rule).
Use What You’ve Got. You can make almost anything into a weapon. Got some keys? Stick ‘em between your fingers and bam! Instant brass knuckles for that special stalker surprise. You know why it’s a natural tendency to stuff your purse full? Cuz it’s the new age flail. Swing for the KO, girls. If you choose to ignore my sensible shoes advice and insist on heels, make them work for you. Before you go for the ever-expected knee to the groin, give ‘em a spiky foot stomp. Believe me, the smashed man parts courtesy of your knee will be doubly effective. Hey, even a tossed hot coffee will distract enough for a getaway. But if you’re serious about protecting yourself, learn some moves and practice, practice, practice. Your hands and feet are fabulous weapons if you get caught naked in the shower. Just sayin’.
Necessary Violence.By now, you might think I’m a violence promoter. I’d prefer a peaceful, picket fence life, but so far…yeah. Not happening. I’ve learned the hard way that, sometimes, violence is the only way to save your skin. If someone is out to cause you harm, he won’t concern himself with your values. Whether you’re a pacifist, a nun, or a mom of three, you’ve got a choice to make: sit back and let him destroy who you are, or fight back because you’re worth saving.
Surrendering is for Suckers. Don’t get me wrong—there are the occasional moments when a temporary white flag is the smartest move to make. Sometimes, your choices suck, and yielding will get you through long enough to hatch a plan. But when it comes to the people who love you, hope, and the big bad out to break you? Never. Stand by the people who love you, even when it may seem they don’t deserve it. Hey, we all make mistakes. When you have nothing left, cling to hope. It will get you to tomorrow. No matter how life is flushing down the toilet, don’t submit to the enemy. Resist until your last breath. Who knows? You might just win.
