PJV Quickie: E.J. Stevens did a great job creating a unique Urban Fantasy world with the start of her Ivy Granger, Psychic Detective series. I think I actually enjoyed the book more because I got to experience the audiobook. Traci Odom’s narration took awhile to get used to, but in the end it worked and I found myself really enjoying the story.
Review: The Ivy Granger, Psychic Detective series reads like a fairie compendium. Ivy is a psychic in a crazy world of fairies, vampires, demons and all sorts of craziness. She gets sucked into a case, against her better judgement and the usual Urban Fantasy insanity begins.
The story was well written and you could tell that Stevens put a lot of thought into the world she constructed. I found that my only dislike came within the creation of Ivy’s bestie, Jinx. Ivy continuously took the blame for outside events that she had no control over and Jinx constantly let her. I didn’t like Jinx. It also had to do with Odom’s narration of Jinx’s voice. Odom nailed the main characters, but I wasn’t too impressed on the secondary character voices. Jinx’s in-particular.
I really enjoyed the character of Ivy – which is a HUGE plus in an Urban Fantasy novel. Hello – the series is all about Ivy. And Stevens crafted a great character. She was just the perfect blend of sassy, yet down to Earth. The dialogue was witty and the plot was fast paced and intelligent. Stevens did a great job.
