Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I’m the author of the upcoming MORTAL ENCHANTMENT series. I’ve spent the last six years as a book blogger. My blog is the Fantasy Book Addict. I also spent three years as a publicist. I love social media and spend too much time on twitter talking about books and fantasy TV shows. I’ve been reading comic books since I was a kid and I occasionally watch cartoons (don’t judge). 😉

Oh, and I love Nerds candy. Only the purple and pink pack.

In your own words, tell us a little bit about your book?
After spending most of his life in the mortal world, sixteen-year-old Rowan is unexpectedly asked to return to Avalon where he will be crowned the king of the elemental fire court. But when he arrives, his ruthless mother insists he must complete a secret mission before he can ascend to the throne: kill the half-human, half-elemental princess of the air court. Rowan will ultimately have to decide if the ends justify the means.

Can you tell us about the characters in your book? Who is your favorite?
It’s hard to pick one character. I love them all for different reasons. But, since the novella is about Rowan, I’ll talk about him.

He’s a very complicated character. In some ways, he’s an antihero. He gets put into a position where he has to make difficult decisions. Regardless of his choice, there will be consequences. It changes him in good and bad ways. He’s a fighter. I love him. 🙂

What makes your book different from other books out there in the same genre?
The novella is free. Does that count? 😉

Here are a few things:

It’s about elementals.
It takes place in both the mortal world and Avalon.
Unlike the series, the novella is written from a male point of view.
It’s a twist on several aspects of mythology.
It’s dark at times, but also centers around love and friendship.

What led to you going “indie”?
I spent three years as a publicist for two successful small publishers. During that time, I’d gotten to know several talented editors, cover designers, etc. Ultimately, I decided I wanted to work with people I was comfortable with. People who I knew would allow me to play a large role in the production and marketing process.

Is Writing your full time profession?
I write full-time which is wonderful! I feel very lucky.

Do you have any quirks or processes that you go through when you write?
I get my best writing done during the day. I must have coffee. Oh, and there’s one last thing. My nerd flag will be flying high after you read this. I have a Yoda toy sitting on my desk. I always have him beside me with his lightsaber in hand like he’s ready for battle. I don’t know why but I think he brings me good luck. 🙂

Who are some of your favorite authors?
I read a lot. My auto-buys include Richelle Mead, Holly Black, Cassandra Clare, Jennifer L. Armentrout, Melissa Marr, and Veronica Rossi.

What are you reading now?
Ignite Me by Tahereh Mafi! I absolutely love this series and recommend it to everyone. I recently met Tahereh at a signing. She’s really funny and sweet.

What advice can you give to struggling writers?
Join a writing group and find a critique partner who isn’t a friend or family member. These are the people who will help you reach your goals. This is a tough, competitive business. Having people in your life who support you is invaluable.

Also, NEVER GIVE UP! If this is your dream, don’t let anyone or anything stand in your way. Work hard and you’ll make it. 🙂

Every sacrifice has consequences.

Sixteen-year-old Rowan has spent most of his life living among the mortals—learning to control the element of fire, impatiently awaiting the day his vengeful mother, Queen Prisma, will abdicate her throne. When he finally returns to Avalon for his coronation, his mother insists he must first prove his loyalty to the court by completing a secret mission:

Kill Kalin, the half-human, half-elemental daughter of the air court king.

Willing to do anything to remove his mother from power, he agrees to sacrifice the halfling. He returns to the mortal world with his best friend, Marcus, determined to kill the princess. But as he devises a plan, he starts to question whether or not he’s capable of completing such a heinous task. And what price he will pay if he refuses?
