PJV Quickie: If you’re a fan of The Hunger Games then Fire & Flood is a must read for you. Victoria Scott has written an amazing YA Science Fiction novel that has the feel of a futuristic dystopian novel but it is set in the present day. The protagonist is very complex and real. She may not be the most likable in the beginning but the character development is great. And there is a great romance.

Fire & Flood is the third book that I have read from Victoria Scott and it is definitely my favorite so far. I didn’t know what it was about when I started reading which just made it even more intriguing. I read this book extremely quickly and I highly recommend it. I think it is one of the best YA Science Fiction books I have read in a while.

Victoria Scott has also written the Dante Walker series and to read Fire & Flood you get a completely different writing style. The snarky style she has in that series is only in small doses here. The main character Tella, strange name haha, is very superficial at the beginning of the novel but that does decrease as the story progresses. I actually enjoyed that Tella was perfect it made her more real. She becomes a really strong female protagonist and kicks some ass when she gets angry.

The story revolves around a race called The Brimstone Bleed and the winner receives a cure. This cure will save anyone from anything. All of the contenders are trying to save the lives of their family members. Most of the characters though know relatively nothing about the history of the competition. That created another layer to this book, it was very mysterious. The best part of this book (other than Guy, I will get to him in a minute though ) were the Pandoras. The Pandoras are genetically made creatures meant to help their contender survive and win. Every Pandora is unique and has special abilities that just continue to evolve as they grow. Tella has a very emotional bond with her fox pandora who may just be the most special one in the race.

Now let’s discuss the romance and friendships. Friendships are something you wouldn’t expect to find in a book in which they are fighting to save a loved who is dying but there are many great ones. Tella makes some allies, which is when the book really picked up for me. I literally couldn’t stop reading at this point. My favorites of the allies Tella makes are Harper and Jaxon. Harper is a badass girl and isn’t afraid to say whatever she is thinking. At the same time though you aren’t sure if she is trustworthy all the time. Jaxon is really adorable and funny. He flirts continuously with Harper doesn’t want any of that. He just brightened up the book for me and was definitely the comic relief. The was a finger incident that will have you dying of laughter but questioning your morals for it.

OH, Guy. What can I say I love a brooding bad boy! He is a man of few words but his actions though are great. Tella falls for someone in the race who is a bit of a mystery himself. I don’t know how well this is going to fair because they both want to win. But I want to see where it goes. Tella and Guy have several awkward moments along the way especially when the people they are traveling with can see them.

I have no clue where this story is going with only one leg of the race left. I think this plot is really unique but has the same feeling and vibe of other books. I think there are so many things that we don’t know about and so many places this can go. I am now in a book hangover because of this so thank you Victoria Scott!!

If you love The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and The Maze Runner by James Dashner I think Fire & Flood is definitely something you will enjoy even though it is not set in the future!
