Interview with Gena Showalter, Author of Alice in Zombieland
GS: The title. I was on the phone with my gorgeous, talented girlfriend Kresley Cole. I jokingly mentioned I was going to call my next book Alice in Zombieland. There was a pause, and then she told me I had to write that book. She was right! Once I sat down and began to plot, I was hooked.
Is your process for writing your YA novels different from writing your adult romance series?
GS: Nah. Let’s face it. A lot of my adult characters are seriously immature. (cough William/Blue/Axel cough) Wait, I feel another coughing fit coming on. (cough Kaia/Anya/Thane’s heroine cough) I just write however I’m led, and things flow.
Have the fans been different? I know just going to say…a Kresley Cole (especially when she brings her cover models) signing is a lot different then going to a Cassandra Clair signing. Have you noticed any changes, any surprises?
GS: I haven’t! I’ve got some seriously awesome fans, and so many have embraced the young adults with the same passion as the adults. But if I had to list a difference, I’d say…I’m asked tamer questions when it comes to the young adults LOL
What has been your biggest challenge when writing the White Rabbit Chronicles?
GS: Connecting some of the dots. In the past, I’ve gotten a grain of an idea and put it in the book, without knowing how to follow through. Well, in a series, that leaves an open thread and I HAVE to figure things out sooner or later, but I can’t deviate from what I’ve already said.
Any advice to your readers, on how to avoid getting devoured by a pack of zombies, especially ones you can’t see?
GS: Befriending a slayer certainly wouldn’t hurt. Stock up on flashlights. Learn how to use a gun. And a crossbow. And maybe even a whip. Take self-defense lessons. But at the end of the day, all you really need to do is outrun your friend. And if you can’t, trip your friend. Everything is fair in love and war, right?
