Vampires are a very well covered territory in fiction. We all know that. The trick is finding a twist on the cliche, a way to make the stereotype fresh and new. And that was precisely my aim in the Clann Series, where the vamps and the witches are constantly just one wrong move away from another worldwide war against each other that will endanger not just their secret societies but all the innocent and unknowing humans caught in the middle as well.
What makes the vamp side in the Clann Series different from other writers’ vampires?
First, while my vamps are similar to Charlaine Harris’ True Blood version in that my vamps also descended from Lillith, in my world Lillith wasn’t created by God to be a vamp. Using an ancient Jewish legend as my basis, my version of Lillith was the true first wife of Adam and started out every bit as human as him on the day they were both made from the earth’s dust. But Lillith didn’t like Adam’s chauvinistic “bow down to me, woman” attitude and she ran away and refused to return to her husband. She chose instead to hang out with demons and eventually became one herself, turning herself into the first vampire. Then she got lonely and resented the fact that God punished her disobedience by not allowing her to have children as he did with Adam and Adam’s new wife, Eve. So Lillith began to take Adam and Eve’s children for her own, turning them into the world’s first “made” vampires by sharing her blood with them.
Secondly, my vamps have souls, so the afterlife is still a big question for the vamps who once believed in God. Will their need for human blood destroy their chance at getting into heaven? Does God forgive vamps for drinking human blood as long as they don’t kill anyone to get it? What if they only drink from bad people, does that make it okay? This also means that religious locations and items do not hurt them.
Third, because my vamps descended from the demoness Lillith, they have the incubus and succubus’ ability to drain a human’s energy through two ways…drinking human blood, or through a kiss. Legend has it that the incubus and succubus come to humans in the night and drain their energy through these two methods, which always really creeped me out, lol! So I included it in my vamps’ mythology. It had the wonderful bonus of making a romantic relationship between Tristan and Savannah even more dangerous because she doesn’t have to bite him to endanger his life. This provides an even stronger reason for why their love is forbidden.
Fourth, my vamps have evolved into daywalkers. It just never made sense to me that vamps wouldn’t eventually evolve in this way! Other species evolve. Why wouldn’t vampires? So mine are daywalkers, though they are still fairly pale due to that whole iron deficiency problem, lol. And because Savannah is also half Irish, the poor vamp/witch hybrid is going to have a ton of fun living in the sunny region of East Texas!
Finally, in the world of the Clann Series, it was always believed that vampires could not procreate because their cells’ ability to regenerate and destroy any invaders always prevented the women from getting pregnant, and no male vampire had ever managed not to kill any human female he might develop feelings for. So when the impossible is proven possible and an ancient Clann spell allows Savannah’s Clann mother to marry her vampire father and then the successful birth of the hybrid Savannah, both the Clann and vamp sides are thrown into total chaos. What will Savannah become? Will she join the vamp side or the Clann? Which abilities and needs will she develop? Will she be a danger to both sides?
One thing is for sure…she definitely can not be allowed to get close to any Clann male. And especially not Tristan who is destined to follow in the footsteps of four previous generations in his family and become the next Clann leader someday!
Vampires have been done to death (pardon the pun, lol). However, given a few kew twists in their mythology and a situation that is built upon some inherent conflicts, I think they can become fresh and compelling again. These violent delights have violent ends
And in their triumph die, like fire and powder,
Which, as they kiss, CONSUME.
—William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet
Tristan Coleman has survived the change from Clann magic user to vampire, much to Savannah Colbert’s joy—and despair. By changing the Clann’s golden boy and newly elected leader, even to save him from death, she has unleashed a fury of hatred and fear that they cannot escape.
As the Clann and the vampire council go to war, Tristan and Sav face a new threat—a fracturing of the all-consuming bond they share. To fight for peace, they must forge a new trust and risk everything to take down their deadliest enemy, even as they must run for their lives. Soon they will learn that some bonds are stronger than love—and some battles cannot be won without sacrifice.
Dangerous to be together. Painful to be apart.
Savannah Colbert knows she broke up with Tristan Coleman for the right reasons. Most of all, to keep from killing him with her new vampire abilities. But try telling her heart. Now, lost in a sea of hostile Clann faces, Sav tries to come to terms with what she’s becoming and what that means for her future. And that someone is doing their best to bully her into making a terrible mistake.
Tristan can’t believe Sav won’t even talk to him. If being apart is her decision, fine. Just don’t expect him to honor it. But even as he prepares to fight for the girl he loves, forces beyond their control take them both in directions neither could have foreseen or prepared for.
A reckoning is coming and not everyone will survive.
Savannah Colbert has never known why she’s so hated by the kids of the Clann. Nor can she deny her instinct to get close to Clann golden boy Tristan Coleman. Especially when she recovers from a strange illness and the attraction becomes nearly irresistible. It’s as if he’s a magnet, pulling her gaze, her thoughts, even her dreams. Her family has warned her to have nothing to do with him, or any members of the Clann. But when Tristan is suddenly everywhere she goes, Savannah fears she’s destined to fail.
For years, Tristan has been forbidden to even speak to Savannah Colbert. Then Savannah disappears from school for a week and comes back different, and suddenly he can’t stay away. Boys seem intoxicated just from looking at her. His own family becomes stricter than ever. And Tristan has to fight his own urge to protect her, to be near her no matter the consequences .
