PJV Quickie: Suzanne Johnson does it again in her third installment of the Sentinels of New Orleans series. Heart-stopping, snarky and action packed fun is delivered over and over again in ELYSIAN FIELDS. I didn’t know whether to get mad, cry or swoon as DJ battled through her crazy life and came through each experience making me like her more and more.
Review: In book three of the Sentinels of New Orleans series, our beloved heroine, DJ Jaco is up against a serial killer – from the early 20th century – The Axman, New Orleans very own Jack the Ripper. This little detail is just one of the reasons I FREAKIN’ love this series. New Orleans is my home town, I had heard snippets about the Axman, so I knew he was real — and Suzanne Johnson wrote him into her story. These details are what makes these books so much more then the usual Urban Fantasy fare. Just the name of the books floor me (they are all street names in New Orleans). Her attention to detail is refreshing and her story-telling gift weaves these details into a plot that turns you into an emotional mess. My biggest gripe is that it sometimes becomes so much, I just want to scream “give DJ a break!!!”
DJ has to solve the mystery behind the Axman, why is he back, who called him back to kill again? Along with dealing with her “new” Elf powers, the Elders, her loup-garou buddy and her sexy former co-sentinel, Alex. Her life is chaotic and very dangerous, full of mysteries and emotion, with the wonderful back-drop of New Orleans, written by a native who KNOWS the city and takes her time to write in facts about the city that only natives would really know were real and rejoice when they are mentioned. When Johnson had DJ, Alex and Ken lunch at Liuzza’s with Ken picking out all the seafood from his seafood gumbo I did a happy reader’s bliss dance. That is what I’m talking about!
The Sentinels of New Orleans is what Frank Davis would call Naturally N’awlins but written so well, all readers will love and get to experience the city! And while doing so meet some great characters, sexy shape-shifters and be carried through a crazy mystery with enough violence, angst and intrigue to get the heart-pumping. Read the series! Start at the first book — go – go now!
Spoilerific Area:View Spoiler » About the third book, we finally get to see Jake go through his break that has been hinted at through the first two books. We know the boy was on the cusp of either a meltdown or a recovery, you now get to see progress on that front. Speaking of Progress! In this book, readers also see progression with Alex and DJ's relationship along with figuring out what the hell is going on with Quince Randolph and his relationship with Eugenie, which DJ knows is just for show. I would also like to give the hint -- that one man from the love-lust-square that has been in play since book one, gets shifted out, but a new character falls into the vacated spot, you'll have to read to figure it out though!
We also get introduced to knew characters, Adrian who is there to teach DJ about her new Elf powers and the vampires of L’Amour Sauvage, owned by vampire Regent, Etienne Boulard. Johnson also introduces us to a new wizarding type, Necromancer, which allows them to control the historical undead.
DJ also goes through so much in this novel, she is being hunted by the crazed serial killer, she has to deal with the Elves, the Elders -- and there is some kind of conspiracy going on that seems to revolve around wanting her dead. It is a lot to deal with along with her personal problems. This made the book exhausting at times, DJ just couldn't catch a break - and it saddens me to think that it's just going to continue in book 4 !!!

Overall, this is a must read series and it just seems to get better and better with each book. Suzanne Johnson creates unique characters in fun, original settings. She weaves humor, violence, mystery and the paranormal into each scene. I can’t get enough of this series, please Ms. Johnson write faster so I can get more of DJ, Alex, Jean Lafitte (swoon) and I think Rand kind of suckered me in…
Recommendations: If you are a fan of Urban Fantasy, read this series! If you are a fan of the Sookie Stackhouse series, I think you just might like the Sentinels, even though I do like DJ better then Sookie. This is an adult series, full of violence and fun stuff, but nothing is graphic or erotic.
Extra Tid Bits:
I love the covers, but I think I might like the UK a little better. While I am smitten with the US cover model, I like the detailing on the UK cover…plus on the US cover – what is going on with DJ’s hair??
