Gretchen Powell is the author of TERRA. She knows a little bit about a dystopian world.
Here are five items in her Terra Survival Pack.
In a devastated, nearly-dead world like Terra’s, there are a few things that might be handy to have around to ensure that you, y’know, survive and all. On the groundworld, you’ll find yourself fending against crazy temperatures, acid rain, and general misery – all of which take preparation! Check out my list of what to put in your Terra survival pack:
- A canteen of purified water.
Water isn’t safe nor clean any longer – in fact, it can straight up kill you, that’s how toxic it is to drink unpurified. Make sure you keep a canteen of Skycity-verified pure water with you at all times. It gets hot out there!
- Food pills.
They may not taste particularly good, but in a pinch there’s nothing that’ll keep you going quite like a couple good ol’ food pills. Keep a bottle on hand for emergencies, or that time between Rationings when you’ve already eaten through your last can of slop.
Savvy scavs know to hit the fields as soon as they can after a rainfall. They wait just long enough for the acid to have evaporated from the ground, but that doesn’t mean everything out there’s going to be safe to touch quite yet. It’s better to be safe than sorry, so keep a pair of gloves on hand just in case.
- A flashlight.
A bit expensive, and quite the commodity, if you can get your hands on a flashlight, you’ve got it made. Your scav efforts are no longer limited to the daylight hours, and it’s a lot easier to feel safer in the dark when you’ve got some light in your pocket.
- A thick skin.
Both literally and figuratively, since the harsh rays of the sun and the atmosphere on the groundworld is likely to take your ghastly paleness and soft skin away like *snaps* that. More than that, though, it’s become a tough world to live in because of the people you live with, too. There are raiders out there, the Black Traders, and other scavs that you’re always competing with. Without a thick skin for all that to bounce off of, the rest of the list won’t matter one bit. It’s exactly why Terra—strong and fiery, but distant and extremely wary of others—is the way she is.
About the Book
A broken and desolate Earth. A young girl struggling to survive. A lost boy with a powerful secret.
A discovery that will change everything.
In the distant wake of a plague that has decimated the Earth’s population, humanity is split in two: The rich and powerful live in skycities that float overhead, while those who remain on the ground have gathered in settlements strewn across a dying planet.
Eighteen-year-old Terra Rhodon is a terrestrial–a denizen of the barren groundworld–who makes her living as a scav. Long abandoned by her father, her caregivers gone, Terra supports herself and her younger brother, Mica, by scouring the earth for discarded scraps and metals to recycle for profit. One day, while on a routine scavenging run, she discovers something that shocks her home settlement of Genesis X-16. When the value of her discovery is revealed, Terra’s world is turned upside down.
Terra suddenly finds herself asking questions no one will answer. Her search for the truth leads her to Adam–a beguiling skydweller unlike any she has ever met. But Adam has secrets and a quest of his own, and with him by her side, the world Terra thought she knew begins to unravel. Soon her discoveries unearth a terrifying conspiracy that has the potential to shatter everything–a revelation that will test the bonds of loyalty, family, and love.
