PJV QUICKIE: This book, THE LAST TRUE VAMPIRE by Kate Baxter is like your A-Typical Vampire Romance. If there is a vampire romance algorithm, this one follows it. Not to say that is bad, for fans of predictable romance algorithms, but it had me bored most of the time. I liked Baxter’s characters and her world was interesting, but for most of the book I thought I was reading a Black Dagger Brotherhood novel – and not a new series. So if you like the Black Dagger Brotherhood and want a series just like it – pick up THE LAST TRUE VAMPIRE, you won’t be disappointed.
REVIEW: Michael, aka Mikhael is the last surviving vampire. He is the KING of the vampires, he isn’t blind, he’s scarred. His entire race was wiped out by a group of non-humans that is intent on killing all vampires. They are called slayers. Michael has been in a slump for the last couple centuries. He barely eats, he barely functions and he won’t even let himself be called by his real name he’s so ashamed of his failing. Until he meets spunky waitress and completely unaware Claire. When he meets her he finds his ONE TRUE mate and bites her and gives her an orgasm against a wall in the back of the club. Spunky Claire takes his 65K watch and runs for the hills – or the crappy slum apartment – and is then plagued with dreams about the crazy man that bit her and gave her the best orgasm of her life.
It is a fun and sexy story, I was just having a lot of de ja vu moments because I felt like I’ve read it all before. Which, I kind of had, I’ve read similar, in a bunch of other vampire romance novels. Baxter did a few things differently, she introduced something called tethering, which I thought was romantic. A vampire loses his/her soul when they turn from dhampirs to vampires. Their soul goes into some kind of repository where they are tethered to another soul. That soul keeps their soul company until they are born and then they bring their soul with them and keep them company until they find the vampire and return the soul. Thus, the two people are tethered together forever. Doesn’t bode well for the rest of the books though, considering Mikhael is the ONLY vampire, so he lost his soul a long time ago – and gave time for Claire to be born. But, what of the next books? The vampires are just now able to be made, so that means their souls are just going into the repository – and basically any mates would be born from this point on in the timeline. We’ll see how Baxter handles that problem. The next book is Rodan, who was introduced in this book. I actually liked him more than Mikhael, since he actually had a lick of sense. And of course – better abs — have you seen the cover for book two? I will be reading on.
Recommendations: For fans of J.R. Ward and vampire romance, you won’t be disappointed.
