Day 26: Share a bit…

[clearboth] [br]

Your Task Today:

Your task today is to share a bit about yourself personally.

To Share or Not to Share?

Sharing personal stories on your own blog can be a scary endeavor. I’m one of those people that will talk your ear off at a dinner party and tell you everything from my shoe size to the type of boys I dated in high school. But, putting that information on the internet for “forever” is another thing entirely.

Personal stories will be judged and broken down. I might think I’m normal, but the majority of the unwashed masses might think I’m a wack-o-doodle. “Who does that?” Obviously, Rachel does. That is my insecurities speaking, of course.

You want to be authentic on your blog though, you want to be viewed as real and honest. To gain this perspective on your blog, you have to get down and real. But, you don’t want to share too much.

Where is the line?

How do you know if it’s too much?

Before you decide to post, you should ask yourself a few questions:

  1. Are there other people featured in your post? Will writing this post reflect poorly or reveal too much information about them which might be detrimental?
  2. Does your post reflect poorly on your former employment or manager? If your future or current employer would read your post would it look bad?
  3. Would the post impact your reputation? Could it reflect poorly on your day job, or if someone at your child’s school, or your neighbor read it, would it not look good?
  4. Is the post negative? If so, is there something to be learned or gained from the negativity of the post?
  5. Will you later regret this post?
  6. Do you reveal information that could be used to find you in real life? Names of schools, employment history, area of residence?

Revealing personal information on your blog is all about your comfort level. What do you feel comfortable with? Don’t push your limits. Keep things simple, or hint at it. You don’t have to reveal all the details, just share the basics.
