The Scariest Adult Horror Novels of all time!

or at least the ones I’ve read…

It is that time of year again! There is no holiday I love more then Halloween and I’ll take a scary book over a movie any day. My first genre love was horror and still to this day the genre holds a special spot in my heart. Nothing like freaking out, scared silly because of a perfectly horrific description.

1It by Stephen King

Stephen King

When it comes to horror novels, Stephen King’s name is always in the lead. His novel IT is the stuff of nightmares and takes the number one spot as the scariest book ever. An evil clown that haunts children, drags them into the drain and eats them alive…yes, this is the stuff of nightmares. Between this book and Poltergeist, my fear of clowns was cemented.

“Kill you all!” The clown was laughing and screaming. “Try to stop me and I’ll kill you all! Drive you crazy and then kill you all! You can’t stop me!” ― Stephen King, It

2Tales and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe

Edgar Allen Poe, Scariest BooksThere is creepy and then there is Poe creepy. Edgar Allan Poe wrote some of the freakiest stuff that I’ve ever read. His poems and novellas gave me shivers. He is best known for his poems like The Raven but check out The Fall of the House of Usher, it is one of his more creepier pieces. Keyword of this segment: creepy.

“During the whole of a dull, dark, and soundless day in the autumn of the year, when the clouds hung oppressively low in the heavens, I had been passing alone, on horseback, through a singularly dreary tract of country; and at length found myself, as the shades of the evening drew on, within view of the melancholy House of Usher.” ― Edgar Allan Poe, The Fall of the House of Usher and Other Tales

3Phantoms by Dean Koontz

904639In which a whole town gets ate…whoah all kinds of scary. This one had me sleeping with one eye open and scared of drains.

“There’s no use wasting are energy being afraid of the devils, demons and things that go bump in the night… Because ultimately we’ll never encounter anything more terrifying than the monster among us. Hell is where we make it.” ― Dean Koontz, Phantoms

4Silence of the Lambs by Thomas Harris

TheSilenceofTheLambs-thumb-330x534-50184These books are much scarier then the movie Clarisse…and freakier as the series goes on. Harris likes his horror horrific.

“I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti” ― Thomas Harris, The Silence of the Lambs

5Communion by Whitley Streiber

Scariest Books ever

The book that cemented my biggest phobia, aliens. I am now scared of aliens, IRL. Clowns maybe creepy, but aliens are what I fear at the end of my bed, grabbing my feet. Because of this true story by Whitley Strieber.

“Little blue f**kers, about that big.” – Whitley Strieber

The Scariest Young Adult Horror Novels of all time!

or at least the ones I’ve read…

If you like your horror with a little kissing and teenage angst this is the list for you. Topping our charts…

1Ashes by Ilsa Bick

Scariest YA Books

Ashes scared my pants off…from zombies, to roving packs of killer dogs…crazed townspeople…you name it. And of course, kissing…

“It was that stages-of-anger thing. I was shocked and then I got pissed and then I fought like hell … and then I went numb. They called it acceptance, but it wasn’t. It’s what happens when you have only two choices: live with the monster, or kill yourself.” ― Ilsa J. Bick, Ashes

2Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake

Scariest Young Adult Novels

One of the scariest Young Adult novels I’ve read, there is even a vivisection…

“I peek over the back of the couch and there she is, my goddess of death, her hair snaking out in a great black cloud, her teeth grinding hard enough to make living gums bleed.” ― Kendare Blake, Anna Dressed in Blood

3The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan

6518042

I just have to say — the baby scene haunted me for weeks after reading this book. I never could move on in the series I was so disturbed.

“There is a child – a baby – who long since kicked off her blankets. Her skin is ashen and her mouth open in a perpetual yet silent scream. She isn’t old enough to roll over, to sit up, to climb. So she lies there kicking her fat legs against the footboard of the crib, eternally calling for her mother. For food. For flesh.” ― Carrie Ryan, The Forest of Hands and Teeth

4Remember Me by Christopher Pike

Scariest YA Novels

I went through an R.L. Stine, Christopher Pike phase when I was in 4th grade. I couldn’t tell you one book title…except Remember Me. Scared me silly. That freaky shadow.

Don’t be afraid, be terrified” ― Christopher Pike, Remember Me

5The Lord of the Flies by William Golding

Scariest YA Novels

Not necessarily a horror title, THE LORD OF THE FLIES is scary though. Nothing like a few male tweens run a muck to scare the pants off you.

“What are we? Humans? Or animals? Or savages?” ― William Golding, Lord of the Flies

What scares you? What are the scariest books you’ve ever read??
