Day 2: If you were/are an English Teacher, share with us your dream lesson plan as far as reading assignments.
Back when I was young enough to make these sorts of decisions, I was an English Major and then realized I would have to teach with that degree if I wanted to do anything of worth with it. Well not of worth, but anything that actually used my literature knowledge…makes sense right? There are no jobs that allows you just to read and analyze classical literature all day long and get paid for it. At least, if they do – I am unaware of these careers.
But, with the patience of a fruit fly, I knew teaching was not the career for me. Hence, art… because you can make such great careers out of art. Yet, I still had a lesson plan all worked out, so based on the books that I could read and read and read again, discuss, read again, discuss some more and then read and mock the people that didn’t “get” these particular titles.
Let us start with a bit of poetry…I am the first to admit my distaste for classic American literature, but Walt Whitman, as always is unique. For some reason, in all my Lit classes, we studied Thoreau and Emerson and brushed upon Whitman. Whitman needs a whole 9 weeks.
WOMEN sit, or move to and fro—some old, some young;
The young are beautiful—but the old are more beautiful than the young.
How can you argue with that?
Moving on from American Poetry to a bit of romantic English Lit. Pride and Predjudice has always been my favorite. Might as well try to pass on the love to a younger generation.
Ok, kissy kissy is over with – now let’s go dark. Dystopian. Real dystopian. I’m not talking, cute girls with braids learn how to shoot a bow and arrow and lament about which boy to love. No, I’m talking, run around naked, hopped up on the insanity of life that is this screwed up world – kind of dystopian.
Now that we are thinking…let’s think some more, why don’t we?
Now that we’ve delved into some Western Philosophy, community and individual responsibility, let’s get more political, but with fun SciFi metaphors…
And if we have time in the year…I might consider these gems…
Now it’s your turn…
