PJV Quickie: Ellie reminds me of Jim from American Pie. Things just go awkwardly wrong for her all the time. You may find that funny, but I found that I really couldn’t relate to Ellie.  I spent a lot of my time thinking: what, why, and ok? I rated Virgin 3/5 stars because I think that I may have been the wrong reader for this book.

For those who grew up on Judy Blume—and graduated to Lena Dunham—a “hilarious”* debut... “Bridget Jones and Carrie Bradshaw, meet your wisecracking, vagina obsessed match. Sanghani's debut is a hilarious, irreverent look at smart-alecky, painfully self-concious, 21-year-old Ellie's relentless mission to rectify a disasterous first attempt at performing oral sex, get deflowered, find the perfect Brazilian wax, avoid her tradition-bound Greek mother's nagging, graduate summa cum laude, be a writer, and fit in...This story for millennials is a wonderful blend of modern agnst with old-fashioned sweetness.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review) “Even Bridget Jones’s Diary could take a page from this novel.

Review: I think the key to this book is the reader’s life experiences. Can you relate to Ellie and find humor in her experiences? For instance, I found Ellie’s description of her first attempt of her first time to be kind of sad. That’s how I felt throughout the book. I felt sorry for Ellie. It’s just not fun to spend time reading a book feeling bad for a character.

Then, I started feeling guilty for not being able to relate, for not having any frame of reference for not knowing what it’s like not to be able to talk to someone, for never having a problem understanding the details to personal grooming, and finally for my pissed off reaction vs. Ellie’s mortification. But really, if I ever slipped in my friend’s one night stand’s ejaculate in the tub, I would totally have harmed someone.

Recommendations: Give Virgin a try if you’re into coming to age stories, or you had some socially awkward experiences as you made your way through losing your virginity, dating, looking at the opposite sex, talking to the opposite sex, or basically breathing.
