PJV Quickie: If you are not reading the Bloodlines series by Richelle Mead, I must ask — “why the hell not?” I wouldn’t say it’s as good as the Vampire Academy series it was spun off from, but it is a close rival. Book five in the series, Silver Shadows, still continues to pack a punch — or more appropriately — a roundhouse kick to the cheek. What a ride! Half the time, I was wondering, is this really happening? The other half of the time I was either at the edge of my seat or chewing on my fingernails, Mead sure knows how to keep a reader on her toes!

I received this book for free from Publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Sydney Sage is an Alchemist, one of a group of humans who dabble in magic and serve to bridge the worlds of humans and vampires. They protect vampire secrets—and human lives.

In The Fiery Heart, Sydney risked everything to follow her gut, walking a dangerous line to keep her feelings hidden from the Alchemists.

Now in the aftermath of an event that ripped their world apart, Sydney and Adrian struggle to pick up the pieces and find their way back to each other. But first, they have to survive.

For Sydney, trapped and surrounded by adversaries, life becomes a daily struggle to hold on to her identity and the memories of those she loves. Meanwhile, Adrian clings to hope in the face of those who tell him Sydney is a lost cause, but the battle proves daunting as old demons and new temptations begin to seize hold of him. . . .

Their worst fears now a chilling reality, Sydney and Adrian face their darkest hour in this heart-pounding fifth installment in the New York Times bestselling Bloodlines series, where all bets are off.

Review: Richelle Mead loves her cliffhangers and she kept us all on the edge of our seats at the end of the last book…and that anticipation continued with the beginning of Silver Shadows. Sydney was taken by the Alchemist and Adrian is in a downward spiral, because as usual, just when he got what he wanted it was ripped away from him. Repeat after me “Poor Adrian!” The boy can’t catch a break, from his crappy parents, to his second-class status in most of his peer’s eyes, luckily he has an eye for strong women who will drag him out of his black hole of self-destruction. But, strong Sydney is being tortured by her people, pumped full of chemicals so her and Adrian can’t even dream about each other. It is quite a dark start and I was cursing Mead as she tortured me with bad Adrian behavior and silly selfless shenanigans by Sydney – which enhanced the fast pace and suspense of the plot. It was torture!

But the torture did have a payoff – and by the end of the book – it spirals into this crazy whirlwind of events that left me with my head spinning. I’m still processing. Just wait!

Narration was a duo, with the introduction of Adrian’s voice, you now have Alden Ford. He wouldn’t exactly be what I had pictured for Adrian’s voice, but it was well-done. Emily Shaffer has been with the series since the beginning and before that she did the Vampire Academy. I’m not a huge fan of her little-girl voice type narration, but it is competent. And she grows on you. Again, not a bad team of narrators, even though I think what a power-house cast could have done with this great series. And I just expected Adrian’s voice to be a little more cultured then how it was portrayed.

Recommendations: Read Vampire Academy first and then move onto Bloodlines. This is a mature young adult novel, more in lines with New Adult, even though there isn’t anything explicit, the characters are in their late teens and are in committed, sexual relationships.
