Review

After 10 years of marriage, Lauren Grahame found out her husband had been cheating on her for 5 of them – with her best friend.  Devastated, she divorces him and goes off to find herself.  She ends up living in the local hotel in tiny Carnal, Colorado, and gets a job as a waitress slinging drinks in Bubba’s biker bar.  Then, in walks Tatum “Tate” Jackson, all good looks, muscles, and attitude.  The first thing he does is insult Lauren, and she decides she doesn’t want anything to do with him.   Too bad for Lauren he’s part owner and bartender of Bubba’s.

As they work together and get to know each other, Tate sets his mind on claiming Lauren as his own (or as he says “I want you on the back of my bike”).  Their relationship grows, and there are so many twists along the way that it seems Lauren and Tate will never work it out: her father gets sick, her ex wants her back, Tate’s history is “complicated” and his job keeps him away for weeks at a time, there’s a serial killer on the loose, and Tate’s ex wants to kick Lauren’s ass, just to name a few of their issues.

_____________

I know, I know – my synopsis sounds like crazy-town, right?    But trust me on this…I’d been seeing some praise for Kristen Ashley’s writing in the twitterverse over the last few weeks, then I read a review of Breathe over at Dear Author, and my interest was piqued.  Actually, I’m glad I read their review before I bought Sweet Dreams, so I knew going in that there were some problems.  The writing isn’t perfect; there are plenty of run-on sentences, punctuation errors and the like.  The hero (Tate) is kind of a bona-fide asshat (He’s crude and bossy but then he’ll turn around and do something so sweet!  Then he’ll go back to being a jerk.  Then sweet!  Then a jerk. Well, you get the picture…).  I also found myself frustrated at times that the heroine let so many questions go unanswered.  But the story was so addicting –  small town, tragic histories, broken hearts, new beginnings, biker dudes and babes, one of the most Alpha(hole) heroes I’ve ever read, a serial killer, a *sort-of* secret baby…I just could not put this book down!!  As soon as I finished Sweet Dreams, I picked up the first book in the series, The Gamble – I’m halfway through and enjoying the heck out of it!!!

Recommendations

Definitely adults only (Tate is pretty crude and the sex scenes are plentiful).  I think anyone who enjoys ‘old skool’ romance will enjoy Sweet Dreams, as long as you can look past the sometimes awkward writing style, the story will capture your imagination and leave you wanting to know more about the goings-on in Carnal, Colorado.
