White Cat by Holly Black

White Cat (Curse Workers, Book 1)White Cat by Holly Black
Review copy provided by publisher.

PJVs QUICKIE POV: A different take on magic, Holly Black wove a very compelling and surprisingly believable tale of black magic and crime families. My expectations were high leading into White Cat, and Black did not disappoint. Her characters were richly developed and the back-story well depicted and portrayed. White Cat spun a tale that had me engrossed from start to finish. This wasn’t a cuddly, romantic little YA novel though, and it’s sharp edges had me enjoying the ride even more.

REVIEW: The world of White Cat is set in an alternative reality, where magic workers, or what are called Curse Workers can lay hands upon someone and manipulate them. Whether they can manipulate their luck, their emotions, memories, or even transform them, depends on the worker. Luck workers are the most common, Transformation workers the most rare. The world wears gloves, because a bare hand can end your life...if you run into a Death Worker.

Cassel is from a long legacy of workers. His mother is in jail from an “Assault” that she did during a con. His brothers work for a crime family that employes workers to do their dirty work. Cassel isn’t a worker though, but the criminal gene does run strong within him. So much so, that at 14 he killed. He doesn’t even remember doing it, only that his best friend ended up dead and that some part of him enjoyed it.

This novel tasted like a Scorsese film. Gritty and real, it spread open a vile little view of black magic and shook it in your face until you became comfortable with it and kind of fell in love with Cassel and his neurosis. There were slight hints at romantic interludes, but personally I feel Cassel has to sort himself out before he finds his soulmate. Which is why I want to beat his mother with a baseball bat. Gotta love those crazy interfering ex-con parents.

A great read for fans for YA. If you are in a mood to step away from the cuddly werewolves and sex kitten witches... you might give White Cat a whirl.

RECOMMENDATIONS: There is a more mature theme to this novel, so I recommend it for older teens, 14+. Fans of Beautiful Creatures, The Iron Series by Julie Kagawa and grittier YAs like the Wicked Lovely series should enjoy.

Discussions questions from Blogwithbite.com

1. Blacks characters pay a price for being powerful curse workers and experience a phenomenon called "blowback" whenever they worked someone. If you had a superpower but knew by using it you would experience a crippling side effect would you still use it?

Yup. Always wanted superpowers.

2. Family plays an important role in White Cat (Curse Workers) -- who did you like the most or the least in Cassel's family and why ??

I didn't like any of them and I think Cassel should say "Asta le pasta" to the entire clan.

3. What did you think about the entire world that Holly Black built? The gloves, the curses? Can you imagine a world like this where an uncovered hand could be a dangerous weapon?

I think Black's world was just crazy believable. It was a new spin on witchcraft and the repercussions were well thought out.

4. With family like this who needs enemies right? Is blood thicker than water? Or in this case should Cassel think about getting a name change and moving far far away from his familial bonds?

Cassel should change his name to Smith and move to like Idaho.

5. Do you think this book is a good set up for a sequel? If so, make your predictions.

I think if I'm not mistaken this is a trilogy. Red Glove is the second in this series.  Probably going to deal with his new found "love" and the release of his mother, which I'm sure will play havoc with his life.  Not to mention the discovery of his own powers...

Spoiler Question:

What did you think about Cassel's mother and the curse she worked in the last pages of the book? Cassel finally thinks he is getting some love...and wham-O!

I really wanted to beat the mom in the head.

The Authoress

Here is a little bit about Amelia from The Authoress:

Hey ya'll.  I'm Amelia Robinson and I've had my blog since about January.  However, I have only recently begun actually being active on it.  I had needed something to do over the summer (cause, lets face it, Latin I online is NOT going to be the only thing I do this summer).  So I started emailing some fellow bloggers, asking what they recommended to get active in the blogosphere.  It is, without a doubt, their help that got me this far.  I now get to post up all my little ditties on the latest urban fantasy novel and rave about the latest dragon fantasy.

A little about myself: I'm sixteen-years-old (which means I'm finally allowed to date, and yet no offers. -_-) and I have two older brothers with autism.  I am the unfortunate owner of a completely goofy German shepherd named Dora, a hyperactive sheltie named Heidi and a possibly suicidal cat named Cat.  I am a writer and I'm currently working on my own urban fantasy book.  I'm a night owl (which sucks during the school year since I have to hit the sack pretty early).  And if you have the unfortunate pleasure of getting a comment from me on your blog, prepare for antics, raves and rants.  I am psychotic.  (Ask Linna @ 21 Pages.  She'll tell you. *nods*)

    Book Blogging 101 - Vlogging

Spawned from the Big Sis, Little Blog program, Book Blogging 101 was born. Do you have a question? Leave it in the comments section or email me parajunkee at gmail dot com

    Summing it up with text....

    Q. What is Vlogging?

Vlogging is Video Blogging. Some would say the future of blogging. I'm not buying it though, especially in our world of book blogging, because when it breaks down - we like to read. Use a vlog to showcase your personality, save a little bit of time and put a face behind the alias - but don't over do it - as I did above! LOL

    Benefits of vlogging:
    1. Puts a face to your blog
    2. Shows off your personality
    3. Save time: do a quick vlog, instead of writing a lengthy post
    4. Saves your readers a bit of time, 30 sec vlog instead of a long post to read
    The downside of vlogging:
    1. Some people don't like watching them. They like to skim posts, and you really can't skim a vlog.
    2. Stalking your blog at work? Sometimes youtube.com is blocked by firewalls or you can't really turn that sound up
    3. You are not showcasing the inner writer that is dying to get out
    4. SEO (Search Engine Optimization) - text is searchable, video is not.
The skinny -accentuate with a vlog, but don't over do it.

    Q. What do I need to vlog?

    1. A Computer
    2. A webcam / camcorder / flip cam with a microphone
    3. Movie editing software
    4. Internet connection
    5. A hosting site, such as youtube.com, vimeo, etc.
Flip UltraHD Camcorder, 120 Minutes (White)For those without a webcam on their puters, I recommend FLIP cams. Easy to use and upload direct to youtube.com. These are the latest trends in vlogging.  Plus they are relatively expensive. The one to the right is listed as $149 on amazon.com {which is the same price as Best Buy and other electronic stores} plus you get a $20 amazon GC when you buy it, which is a good deal. If you were thinking about getting a video recorder, but are intimidated with all the software and extras that go with it, this is a good one.

Otherwise, most laptops and computers come with a webcam. My iMac came with one installed and the software to go with it: iMovie. All the new laptops have one - which makes life very easy.  Make a quick vlog - and now blogger lets you upload a video directly, so you don't even have to host on youtube or another video website. See the little "action" icon, I don't know what those things are called...LOL Just click it and you can upload your movie...and now are you ready to do a VLOG?

Have you done a VLOG? We want to see it, link it up no matter what the topic!

    Genre: Urban Fantasy, Paranormal Romance

The road to hell is paved with heavenly desire…

    Angelic Avengers, Book 1

Fetch a soul? No problem. Quell a little shape shifter rebellion? She can do that, too. Just an average day in the afterlife of Arabella “Bella” Morrison. Or, what she hopes will become an afterlife after restoring the cosmic imbalance caused by her suicide over a love affair gone bad.

Protect a willful fallen angel? That takes a little more teamwork than she’s accustomed to. Especially when the team includes Gray Devereau, a sexy, half-breed angel who’s got an eye on her—in more ways than one. Their attraction could set fire to Heaven itself. Normally not a problem for Bella, but Gray’s sights are set on something more than a fly-by-night affair.

Save mankind from chaos? Bring it on. Let her heart trust a man enough to love again? It’ll be a cold day in hell…

Warning: Sexy angels running amok. Heroine hell-bent on saving the world, the rules be damned. Hero bent on making her his, come hell or high water.

Trailer Tuesday - Being Jamie Baker

Trailer Tuesday pairs up with my review today... Being Jamie Baker after viewing the trailer the next post is the review! *hint hint*

Being Jamie Baker by Kelly Oram

Being Jamie BakerBeing Jamie Baker by Kelly Oram
Review copy provided by Bluefields Publishing

PJVs QUICKIE POV: The book trailer worked for this one! Sold me hook line and sinker, which is total first. I hadn’t read a review, I hadn’t seen a promo - I just saw that trailer. So good job Being Jaime Baker designers, film minions and creative personnel! After reading the book, though, how could they not have made a trailer that rocked it? The book was a great mix of candy coated emotions, touching, funny, a bit edgy, and all together entertaining. I really expected a future ABC Family made for TV movie and what I got was just pure joy to read. Kelly Oram is now on my radar and I can’t wait to read what she has in store for us next!

REVIEW: After a very traumatic incident involving a tanker truck full of toxic waste, an electric tower and a convertible, Jamie Baker is the world’s only superhero. Unfortunately she is still in high school, and she can’t tell anyone about her new found abilities because they will most likely put her in a government lab for testing. Therefor it is quite understandable that Jamie is a little stand-offish. Or as the rest of the school likes to call her, The Ice Queen.

Jamie is completely secure in her title as the school’s biggest witch and is actually taken by surprise when she overhears (with her super hearing) the school’s heartthrob Ryan Miller and his teammate Mike discussing her and making a bet that involves kissing her, the homecoming dance and who gets to take Becky (A-Pop Chick #1) to the dance. To make matters worse, when Ryan does approach Jamie, he doesn’t try to cover it up, or worm his way into kissing her, he tells her honestly that they made a bet, if he can kiss Jamie, he gets to take Becky to homecoming. Faced with Ryan’s honesty, his undeniable charm and a secret obsession with quarterbacks, Jamie does what any self-respecting superhero would do in her situation, she straddles Ryan and plants the hottest kiss on him that she can manage. Which is pretty hot since she can channel electricity. After that, Jamie’s Ice Queen status is shot...or at least in Ryan Miller’s eyes - and it becomes Jamie’s first Epic Battle. Her battle against the charm of Ryan Miller, her battle against the rest of the school and their tendency to really not like her. Her battle against her powers which tend to flair out of control when she gets highly emotional and the sleazy reporter that keeps on sniffing around after the accident. And lastly the battle against herself and her big fat trust issues.

I think Being Jamie Baker would entertain anyone. You don’t even have to be a fan of the paranormal-eque genres. This is more of a lightly “super” touched YA with the focus being emotions and romance. From the strikingly pink cover, to the comic styled trailer, the book screams light and fluffy, but in reality it is a well written and charming coming of age and superpowers story of a girl, that meets a boy, almost kills him, but in the end just might find love.

RECOMMENDATIONS: Nothing too heavy for younger teens, I passed it on to a 13 year old with no qualms at all. Fans of lighter YA novels, such as the Gallagher Girls series will enjoy, but it is also a good transition novel {back and forth} for chick lit to paranormal.

Strange Angels by Lili St. Crow

Strange Angels (Strange Angels, Book 1)Strange Angels (Strange Angels, Book 1) by Lili St. Crow
Guess what? I bought this book...yeah.

PJVs QUICKIE POV: Having purchased this book awhile back, I'm very sad that I waited this long to read it, because this book rocked! Dru Anderson sucked me in and spit me out...leaving me with a hankering for red meat, a new found obsession with yet another teenage hottie boy character (and a taste for apple pie) and a few new one liners for my snark library. To break it down this book went from 0 to 60 in the first few pages and then didn't slow down, not even in the end. The characters were excellent, the progression top-notch, and the story-line intense. I can't wait to read Betrayals (Strange Angels, Book 2)!

REVIEW: Dru Anderson has a strange life, following her father around the country as he hunts Big Baddies isn't exactly normal. She has gone from school to school, from town to town, with her high education coming in the form of weapons training, martial arts and hexing, instead of the normal high school curriculum.  And yet, while Dru might have an odd life it is her life and she is content, that is of course until her father fails to come home from a hunt...

Dru's life is now spiraling into chaos. Something or someone is chasing her, she has some how garnered herself a "hanger-on" in the form of a half-Asian goth kid and to top it off she has to deal with the loss of her father. Could it get any worse?

Poor Dru! She was such a rock solid character, a cross between Max (Dark Angel) and a female John Connor (Terminator) or Dean (Supernatural), the depth of her character seeped into this book and made it a crazy, worthwhile read. The action, paired with the emotional trauma, snarky inner dialogue and witty repertoire between the characters pushed this YA into an all time favorite slot for me. The interaction was so real, I could just picture it happening, even the subtleties, of how Dru would describe Graves - and how she would soften to him at moments when her guard was down.

Then there was Christophe, who shows up later in the book - but definitely makes an entrance. If you've read a few of my other reviews, it is pretty evident that I go for the bad boys...so I was swooning over Chris the moment he strangled Dru ;) Nothing like saying "I ♥ U" like a round house.

If you like hard-hitting YA - you'll enjoy this novel!

RECOMMENDATIONS: PG-13, nothing too garish or sexual in these pages, so fit for your younger teens. Fans of Vampire Academy should really like this series.
